Helen thorpe | Counselling & psychotherapy

Feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, stress, or the weight of life’s challenges? If you’re feeling stuck or unsure how to move forward, you don’t have to face it alone. Together, we can find clarity, balance, and a path ahead.

I'm an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist based in South West London, offering in-person sessions in Tooting and online therapy across the UK. I provide a safe, confidential and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions and challenges without judgement. Our work together often involves understanding the roots of your struggles, whether they stem from early life experiences or current circumstances, so you can move forward with greater clarity and resilience. My approach is warm, empathetic and tailored to help you feel heard, understood and empowered.

I specialise in supporting individuals with:

  • Anxiety – including general anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, overthinking and physical symptoms. We’ll explore what’s triggering your anxiety and how past experiences may shape your responses.

  • Depression – supporting you through low mood, lack of motivation or hopelessness, while gently exploring patterns that may be keeping you stuck.

  • Loss, Grief and Bereavement – helping you navigate the pain of losing a loved one or facing major life changes. Whether your grief is recent or long-standing, we’ll work at your pace to process emotions like sadness, anger or numbness.

  • Stress – whether from relationships, work, family or life transitions, I’ll help you identify the sources and develop healthier coping strategies.

  • Low Self Esteem and Self Doubt – exploring feelings of not being 'good enough' and the deeper beliefs affecting your confidence and self-worth.

  • Perinatal Mental Health – dedicated support during pregnancy, after birth and in the postpartum period, including anxiety, depression and overwhelm.

If you’re feeling stuck or weighed down, therapy can be a powerful first step toward healing, self discovery and long term emotional wellbeing. Whether you're looking for therapy in Tooting, South West London or online from anywhere in the UK, I’m here to walk alongside you in your journey toward feeling more grounded, empowered and connected.

Pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood bring significant emotional changes. While this time can be joyful, it can also feel overwhelming for both men and women. I specialise in perinatal mental health, offering support for anyone struggling with:

  • Postnatal Depression – feelings of sadness, exhaustion, and disconnection after birth, affecting both parents.

  • Birth Trauma – processing difficult or traumatic birth experiences.

  • Anxiety During Pregnancy – worries and fears about pregnancy, birth, or parenting.

  • Adjustment to Parenthood – navigating identity shifts, new responsibilities, and changing relationships.

  • Fertility Struggles and Infertility – coping with the emotional toll of fertility issues and treatments.

  • Baby Loss – offering compassionate support for those grieving miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal loss.

Both mothers and fathers can experience emotional challenges during this transition, and counselling provides a supportive space to explore your feelings and find balance. Learn more about my perinatal mental health support here.

About My Approach

I work integratively, meaning I draw from a rich blend of therapeutic models to support you in a way that feels truly tailored and responsive to your unique needs. At the heart of my work is a person-centred foundation, offering a warm, empathic, and non-judgmental space where you feel genuinely heard, accepted, and understood.

Alongside this, I bring in psychodynamic thinking to help us explore how early experiences and unconscious patterns may be shaping your present-day relationships, emotions, and behaviours. By making space for what lies beneath the surface, we can begin to understand and shift long-held ways of being.

Depending on what feels helpful in the moment, I may also draw on a wider range of approaches such as Gestalt therapy, inner child work, creative techniques, or mindfulness-based tools. This integrative style allows us to remain flexible and collaborative – responding to what’s alive in the room, rather than following a one-size-fits-all method.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which means I adhere to their ethical framework and professional standards. I work with care, empathy, and integrity, offering structured guidance and steady support to help you move forward at your own pace. You can view my BACP therapist profile here to learn more about my professional background and approach.
